Comic Book Boom! Origins #2

The '90s comics industry doubled down on the trends that had been emerging the previous decade, taking them to cartoonish extremes to capture fans' attention.

By November of 1992, publishers were milking these trends for all they were worth. Marvel even spun out an infamous new line of books taking place in the futuristic year of 2099 – with each new #1 issue having its own foil cover, of course.

In Comic Book Boom!, you play as a publisher rushing out comics to capitalize on those trends and make bank in the booming market.

The game features eight popular '90s themes that help your comics attract more and more readers – unless you overdo it.

The 44 book cards that come with Comic Book Boom! allow you to mix-and match these themes and build a unique line of comics every game.

Futurai, for example, shares a ninja theme with Throwing Star and a future theme with Omega 3033, helping you build market synergies between books.

But it wasn't just foil covers and trendy themes, dear readers! To continue our tale, we need to develop some serious 'tude.

Congrats to this round's winner, Cory F., and thanks to everyone who helped pick an origin story for the game character Futurai!

The Comic Book Boom! character Futurai

Winning origin story

As a private eye working the dystopian streets of New Seattle in the year 3033, Jaime Lee uncovered an illegal timefold navigator. Using the device to travel back to the 1990’s, Jaime became Futurai, using her ninja training to prevent the cataclysm that led to her dark future.

Help tell the next chapter of our origin story

Lucky gadabouts who help us create origin stories could win even more vintage '90s comics from the Gadabout Gada-Vault.
